LBP Family Beginnings…

Have you ever wondered how did they begin in the industry? Well LBP members give you a glimpse of how they began in the industry.

The following sets of questions were asked to each LBP team member:

What made you want to be in this industry?

How did you begin in the industry?

What were some of the hardest obstacles that you had to overcome in this industry?

What is your best memory you have from being in the industry?

What do you enjoy to do in your spare time?

Locke

1. Didn’t think I could make any money as an actor and liked the technical stuff.

2. I was a theater major in college and was in a summer stock production of the LION IN WINTER as the technical director.  I became friends with the guy playing the king who was the Production Manager at a local television station.  He told me that if I wanted a job he would hire me and so, after the play ended, I went to work as a projectionist/film editor/studio cameraman/sometime on-camera kidshow talent/night time janitor – it was a small station.  I worked full time the rest of the time I was in school and then stayed in TV when I got out. After a couple of years of working as director and news cameraman, I started this company and here we are today... 40 years in 2012.

3. Actually, the road traveled has been all over the place, full of rocks and potholes but has been one of the great joys of my life. Lots of obstacles but nothing insurmountable… yet.

4. Hard to say… so many good times and people that I have dealt with.

5. I like to be on the water so Camille and I go down to the bay and spend time on our boat.

Camille

1. Food and rent

2. Making 16mm generic training films

3. Locke! Only kidding

4. I always enjoy mixers and parties when I get to see all my friends in the industry.

5. I cook and garden and go fishing.

Mark

1.The idea of being involved with Mass Communications was a powerful elixir.

2. My breakthrough was as a News-talk program producer for KTRH Radio. I had a friend who knew a friend who had a friend who was in the business. Luck!

3. Embracing change!  Realizing that “that’s the way we have always done it” is the worst reason for doing anything.

4. Seeing the outcome of any project or situation and then figuring out how to get there.  And meeting and working with really cool people, music, sports, movies and media.

5. Live music and golf.

Mike

1. Playing on the computer or building something in  my woodshop.

2. You’ll have to read my book.

3. I wouldn’t say it is an obstacle but certainly a continuous challenge is keeping up with the technology.

4. Right as I graduated from UT, I landed a job lighting and operating camera for Sheltervision, a LA company shooting a TV series featuring live performances of Texas musicians.

5. I like being behind the camera.

Linda

1. I originally thought I wanted to be in the news business and pursue Journalism but decided in college to broaden the scope a bit so instead decided to major in Radio/Television/Film. The communications industry always intrigued me.

2. After college I moved to Austin and first got on with the cable access channel running camera at local baseball games. Decided that wasn’t for me, later moved to Houston and went to work for a production company.

3. A difficult obstacle early in my career was balancing and juggling my 3 young boys and the long and crazy hours required to make it in this business.

4. I have many great memories. It’s always enjoyable to see a big project come to a successful conclusion!

5. I love to spend time with friends, drink good wine, travel and read.

Nicole

1. I have an aunt in advertising whom I looked up to growing up, and while in college, unable to decide on a major, I went on a commercial shoot with her for one of her clients, and realized that behind the scenes was where I belonged.

2.  I interned with Cool Films, a Houston based video production company, my last semester in college.

3. Realizing that 9 to 5 is not a reality, and that change is the only constant.

4.  The first time I worked on a production from start to finish and saw every level of the fruits of my labor.

5. I am a computer game and a pop culture junkie; anything TV/Film/Music related I gravitate toward.   I also love catching up with friends and family over dinner or lounging on the sofa with my 2 dogs.

1. Always liked the idea of being involved in the movies.  In 6th grade for the yearbook all students were asked what they wanted to be when they grew up.  I said Actor.  Later I met a friend of my fathers that was a photographer and I decided photography was to be my thing which paid for half of my college tuition.  I had a scholarship with the school publications while I studies TV and Film production.

2. After college I started as assistant producer in an Advertising Agency.  However, my first paid industry job was PA for the art department of a movie in Mexico.

3. I don’t think I have had any obstacles, I have been able to go from one opportunity to another, however I do believe because I have not been in many places and I have never self-promoted myself, so unless I am working with a company, very few people know I am around and of my skills, so self-promotion and lack of exposure has been an obstacle.

4. I had the opportunity to take a slight shift in my career and was a tour manager for Mexican Professional Wrestling tour that did 27 live events in 13 cities, which included promotional touring prior to the events.  Going on the road with all of the wrestlers and production staff and doing live events was something I will always remember and will have plenty to talk about.

5. Work some more, play with my 2 boys and train for triathlons.

Kenny

1.   I am a geek for creating things. I love marrying A with D and a little bit of L and coming up with something that has never been done.
2.  I began making things in college, this led to my first job, creating content for ESPN.
3. The hardest part about my job is that it is my job and also my hobby. It takes up a lot of my time and thought. Finding the right balance between family and my art is important.
4. It's this feeling that I get, after leaving the set from a long day of directing and making choices, it's as if I review the day and realize I was made to do this. It's the best feeling.
5. My family, it has been the best year for me personally. I enjoy films and taking photographs, as well as running and working out.
