The Greek's pick of the week!

Believe in the magic of cinema again!

This week, I am recommending Martin Scorsese’s Hugo in stunning 3D! Let me be the first one to say I was skeptical about this movie when I first saw the trailer, but it grew on me. Also, I will be the first one to tell you 3D movies are a joke and out to get your money! To my surprise not only was the 3D good in this film, Scorsese took this new medium of filmmaking and used it as a tool to tell a better story. (Not as a gimmick like so many other films do.)

Spoilers ahead…

So, what is this movie about?

It is based on a book called The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Sleznick. The film is a turn-of-the century historical fiction about a boy who secretly lives in a train station in Paris, France.  Orphaned in a train station, he works on its clocks and steals spare parts from a wind-up toy vendor in the station so that he can work on the automaton, a little bronze mechanical man that his father found in the attic of the museum that he worked at. This is the only thing Hugo has left of his father and firmly believes if he gets the automaton working again that there will be a message from his father. Later the audience will discover that the owner of the toy shop at one point is a magician turned filmmaker who created the automaton.

I think this film was just great, beautiful, amazing, and full of wonder. Many people will believe that is just a family film, but really it is a mystery and not just one mystery but two mysteries that are intertwined together. This film is Scorsese’s love letter to the filmmaker George Melies and the early beginnings of motion picture and the roots of what movies are to become.

Hugo is probably one of my favorite movies of 2011, it made me fall in love with cinema all over again and hopefully it will do the same for you. I think you should see this movie (in the 3D, if you can!).
